Android Apps Still Should not Be Specific to Tablets

Andy Rubin's "I don’t think there should be apps specific to a tablet" comment is probably the most misunderstood quote in the history of Android platform. It is still been quoted by general public as the reason why there are no Android tablet apps (which isn't true btw). Andy Rubin did not mean that Android app developers should not make their apps utilise the larger tablet screens and make their apps work nicely on tablet hardware. In fact, that is the exact opposite of the meaning behind that quote.

On Android we build apps that adapt to multiple screen sizes. Android apps are designed to be responsive and to utilise continuum of screen sizes instead of just two. There is no such thing as "the Android tablet".

Today, Google's Android dev advocates have put together a great checklist explaining in detail how to make your apps follow the meaning behind the Rubin's quote. Head to Tablet App Quality Checklist page to see a great 10 point checklist every developer and designer should follow.

Responsive design is also the topic of tomorrow's Android Design in Action video podcast by Nick and Roman. Tune in Oct 9, 4:30 PM - 5:00 PM GMT+02:00 or check out the recording afterwards!

  1. If Android makes it easy to develop an app that runs well on a wide range screens then I think they should go for more development in this direction to have some more users to this category too.

  3. It shouldn't be and developers should also see that people would love to have those apps in their phones too. Some people are fond of using tablets but there are huge number of people who have Android phones.
